Open Cooling Towers

Open towers can provide an efficient central water-cooling loop when the circulating water quality and treatment program are suitable for the plant.

Closed Circuit Cooling Towers

Closed-loop designs isolate the process fluid from the evaporative water circuit. They can be considered where the mold or process loop requires cleaner fluid and easier separation.

Dry and Adiabatic Cooling

Dry or adiabatic systems may be considered where water use, water treatment or seasonal operation is a major design constraint.

Selection Method

  1. List every cooling point connected to the central loop.
  2. Calculate total heat load and add an appropriate operating margin.
  3. Confirm circulating flow, entering and leaving water temperatures and pressure loss.
  4. Review local wet-bulb temperature, water quality, noise and maintenance access.
  5. Match the tower, dry cooler or hybrid system to the production schedule and expansion plan.
